Construction 1

The Kittel steam railcar

Concept:

In 1985 there were very limited sources to get gears and other construction material (Internet was invented after 1991).

I used therefore available inexpensive material from a electronic mail order company.

· Plastic worm gear and gears modulo 0,4

· Bühler 12 V electric motor

· Brass wire for the power picking

· Self made brass flywheel

With the available resources I decided to build a two wheel drive set which should have enough friction power for pulling one additional car. The motor was placed above the rear wheels with a extended shaft and additional bearing for the flywheel

For the power picking i used brass wire glued under the frame to pick up from all four wheels.

To improve the power picking and the driving i have created a 3 point driving gear with a pendular rear axles. After several test runs it turned out, that the frame was to light and must be weighted with additional lead to improve the friction.

The painting was done with a spray can from Revell, Oliv RAL 7013.

Conclusion:

· The gearing was build with very limited available material.

· The railcar starts moving at 2 volt and reaches prototype speed already at 4 volts. At 12 volts it reaches world record suspicious speed.

· The wheels are made of brass. Because of their shape they have no good friction.

· The railcar runs 5cm powered by the flywheel when the power is shut off at prototype speed.

In 1985 I bought a plastic model kit of a M+F Kittel Steam railcar at a mail order company. At this time there was no

other model of this kind of railcar on the market and there was only one very expensive motorisation kit available.

The kit was not very difficult and it had enough room for a motorisation.

So I decided to construct it on my own.

This was my first own construction so i want to make it easier and decided to build a 2-track locomotive.

Zugschluss

This first try in construction is not rated as a flop. I had created a unique model at this time, which was able to run on all available tracks and turnouts.

In competition to the typical available commercial models at this time, the flywheel demonstrated the better concept.

Since some years the „Kittel“ is not longer in use and is waiting for a refurbishing of the driving gear - maybe together with another stored kit in the red DB colour in Trix Express 3-track version?
